Hundertwasser first visited Cape Verde, a group of 16 volcanic islands 600 kilometres off the western tip of Africa, in 1973. The island state, which was still under Portuguese administration at the time, became independent two years later. From 1982-1985, Hundertwasser created the stamp edition for the new state of Cape Verde. Hundertwasser's watercolour design 770 was engraved into a steel plate with the finest lines and realised in three colour variants for the 50 Escudos special souvenir sheet issue. The steel engraving process, which is rarely used today, is particularly suitable for the smallest depictions. The three colour variants of 'Vapor' were printed in a limited edition of 10,000 copies each by the Austrian State Printing House. Format 26 x 19 cm (H/W), individually numbered. We supply the sheet in an elaborate object framing with a matt black bevelled passe-partout, which was embossed by hand in blue to match the motif. The numbering is visible through a window in the passe-partout. With black solid wood lacquer moulding, dust-proof glazing. Format 35.5 x 26.5 cm (H/W).
