Ernst Ludwig Kirchner spent four summers on Fehmarn between 1908 and 1914. He regarded the island in the Baltic Sea as his little paradise. He also made the small island town of Burg appear almost paradisiacal in this painting - with a strong red and a rich green as the dominant colours. The treatment of Kirchner's work during the Nazi era is exemplary of National Socialist art policy: more than 600 of Kirchner's paintings were removed from museums. His 'Coffee Table' from 1923 bears witness to his preoccupation with Cubism in the perspective he chose, but is entirely Kirchner in its two-dimensional abstraction. It shows the family's conversation as a moment of intimate familiarity and serene calm and invites the viewer to join in, not least through its bright, warm colours. Original oil on canvas, Museum Folkwang, Essen. Brilliant reproduction in fine art giclée process on artist's canvas, mounted on a stretcher frame. Limited edition of 499 copies, with numbering and certificate on the reverse. Framed in a handcrafted real wood frame. Format 78 x 78 cm. Exclusively at ars mundi.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner on Fehmarn. To each painter his own paradise: For Van Gogh it was the South of France, for Nolde either the exoticism of the South Seas or the landscape around Seebüll, for Slevogt Nidden on the Baltic Sea. The examples could easily be added to. For Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, however, it was most certainly Fehmarn. The artist visited the island four times between 1908 and 1914, and during his stays he produced no fewer than 120 paintings as well as countless watercolours, drawings and sketches. If one reads the letters and notes, Kirchner not only found motifs and artistic inspiration on Fehmarn, but also a form of happiness that he never found again in his later life. On Fehmarn, the painter of the nervous big city became a closely observing depictor of nature, whose paintings are still able to communicate his personal sense of happiness to today's viewers. Kirchner invites him - like the blue figure in his 'Fehmarn Bay with Boats' - to a pure, undisguised, relaxed contemplation of his paradise.Original: 1913, oil on canvas, 120 x 90 cm, privately owned. In a nutshell, the Impressionists found their way back out of their studios and into the great outdoors, while the Expressionists discovered the big city and its people as their central motif. It is the fundamental experience of this period: Berlin had long since grown into a city of millions, and the urban interplay of familiarity and anonymity provided the painters with their subject matter. Kirchner's 'Two Ladies in a Café' portrays typical, emphatically self-confident female figures in a presumably gas-lit ambience. Original: oil on canvas, Kirchner Museum, Davos. The imaginary signals that Eugenio Carmi emits seem to come directly from the depth and infinity of space, which is divided into two different aggregate states. In the upper room an unreal atmosphere, in the lower part glowing heat makes it impossible. But there is hope. Within the signal circle, whether imaginary or real, the colours become more 'life-friendly'. Blue signals the presence of vital oxygen, green signals that the forces of nature have already begun to claim their right to life.
