190 oil paintings and 108 drawings - during his stay in Arles from 21 February 1888 to 3 May 1889, which lasted just over a year, Vincent van Gogh went into a creative frenzy. At the same time, a striking brightening of his colour palette literally catches the eye: in numerous letters, he requests chrome yellow, vermilion, Prussian blue and emerald green from his brother Theo, who supported him unwaveringly until his death, and subsequently uses these colours intensively. A shining example is the 'Starry Night over the Rhône', the description of which we leave to the great painter (and in his letters often no less great prose writer) himself: '... a study of the Rhône, of the illuminated city reflected in the blue river. Above it, the starry sky - with the Great Bear - sparkling pink and green on the cobalt blue surface of the sky, while the lights of the city and its glaring reflections are reddish gold and bronze green. The last years of Vincent van Gogh's life were characterised by enormous productivity. Hundreds of paintings, sketches and preliminary studies were created. The paintings of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) do not show that the Dutch painter, who is now highly remunerated, literally struggled for every brushstroke. Sometimes because of the cost of paint, canvas or studio, sometimes because of the inspiration that often came to him in spurts. These intense creative moments gave rise to legendary works that anticipated the Fauves and Expressionism. During his seventy-day stay in Auvers-sur-Oise alone, he created around eighty paintings. This painting was also created during his last and most turbulent creative phase. While artists such as Pissarro and Cézanne had praised the peaceful charm of Auvers, van Gogh transformed the landscape into a volcanic area whose houses look as if they have been shaken by an earthquake. It is a myth that Vincent van Gogh was only able to sell one of his paintings during his lifetime, although a few were probably sold. However, 'The Red Vineyard in Arles' is the only one whose sale can be proven. However, van Gogh's brother and supporter Theo had already realised the importance of the painting. When the painter sent it to him together with other paintings, Theo expressed his enthusiasm in a letter dated 16 June 1889: 'There is a power of colour in all of them that you have not yet achieved', he commented and informed his brother that the 'Red Vineyard' had already found a place in his home.Original: 1888, oil on canvas, 75 x 93 cm, Pushkin Museum, Moscow. Far away from the dreary Parisian winter and the confines of the big city, he was finally happy and discovered the colour yellow. Here in Provence, he drew new strength. This resulted in some famous views and the sunflower paintings. The period in Arles was one of the most productive in the life of the Dutch painter and important representative of Post-Impressionism Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890). His works reflect the sun-drenched landscapes of southern France. Van Gogh was also full of hope: he wanted to found an artists' colony in his studio in the Rhône town. He repeatedly painted portraits of the town and its surroundings. The nearby place of pilgrimage Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, directly on the Mediterranean, is surrounded by the Camargue, today a unique nature reserve. The vivid blue of the sky, the red of the Mediterranean soil and the solar white of the houses are now part of van Gogh's palette. Original: oil on canvas, Kunsthaus Zurich, Switzerland. The vital, swirling and yet strictly organised nature in his paintings reflects the agitated mood of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) in these years. Happy with his studio in Arles, the Dutchman painted a series of tree gardens, among other things. The even light could be a reference to the Post-Impressionist Paul Signac, who had visited him shortly before. Original: Oil on canvas, Neue Pinakothek, Munich. High-quality reproduction in fine art giclée process on artist's canvas with linen texture, on wooden stretcher. Covered with artist's varnish.
