Vincent van Gogh's seventy-day stay at L'Auberge Ravoux in Auvers-sur-Oise was to be an incredibly intense creative period. Van Gogh created around eighty paintings during this time, including some of his famous cypress paintings. Van Gogh visited the doctor and art lover Paul-Ferdinand Gachet in the village, a good thirty kilometres from Paris. Gachet was well acquainted with the Parisian artists of the time and seemed to his brother Theo to be able to treat his mental illness. Ultimately, however, he was unable to prevent the 37-year-old from dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on 29 July 1890. His last paintings are strongly coloured and characterised by emotional forms - thus paving the way for the Fauves and Expressionism. 'Church of Auvers-sur-Oise': The early Gothic church with its Romanesque chapels is one of Vincent van Gogh's last motifs. It looms monumentally against the empty, dark blue sky. Not correct in perspective, but for its own sake. It stands at a fork in the road. Original: oil on canvas. Musée d'Orsay, Paris. In the spring of 1886, Vincent van Gogh accepted the invitation of his brother, the art dealer Theo van Gogh, and moved to Paris. 'I hope to make such progress that you can show my work without hesitation', he told him in advance, and van Gogh's painting did indeed change. He met Degas, Pissarro, Seurat and many other artists; he exhibited with Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Emile Bernard and Paul Gauguin the following year. His encounter with the Impressionists and his interest in Japanese woodcuts led to his palette becoming more colourful. 'Fishing in Spring' is a perfect example of this. The painting is part of a series of works that depict the Seine bridge built in 1874 between Clichy on the right bank and Asnières-sur-Seine on the left bank in very different ways - just as Hokusai had done in his series of views of Mount Fuji, for example. And it is a clearly Impressionist-inspired and atmospheric masterpiece.Original: 1887, oil on canvas, 49 x 58 cm, Art Institute Chicago.
