Cézanne painted almost exclusively landscapes of the area around Aix-en-Provence, still lifes and scenes of everyday life, in which he wanted to depict what he perceived rather than visible nature. He developed a new conception of space, form and colour that was to set the trend for subsequent generations of painters. He is rightly described as the 'father of modernism'. Paul Gauguin's (1848-1903) main works were created in Tahiti, where he first emigrated in 1891 and then permanently in 1895. His life there stands in striking contrast to the motifs he worked tirelessly on in the South Seas. It was characterised by poverty and illness, while his paintings depict Tahiti as an exotic world with seemingly happy and unselfconscious people - a reflection of a lost paradise. Original: 1902, oil on canvas, 65.6 x 75.9 cm, Museum Folkwang, Essen. 5-colour edition in hybrid process on 260g Rives laid paper. Limited edition of 500 copies. Folkwang founder Karl Ernst Osthaus almost refrained from buying this masterpiece in 1904, as prices for Gauguin rose immediately when news of the painter's death reached Europe. By the time it was painted, the Polynesian paradise had long since become hell for the painter: Penniless, seriously ill and threatened with imprisonment, he created works of barely encoded, existential impact. The 'Contes Barbares' thematise death and transience with symbols such as offerings and lilies - and they do so in portraits: Gauguin adds his friend Jacob Meyer de Haan, who had died years earlier, to the young, vital Polynesian women.
