Product information "Paul Gauguin: Picture 'Contes Barbares - Barbarische Erzählung' (1902), framed"
Folkwang founder Karl Ernst Osthaus almost refrained from buying this masterpiece in 1904, as prices for Gauguin rose immediately when news of the painter's death reached Europe. By the time it was painted, the Polynesian paradise had long since become hell for the painter: Penniless, seriously ill and threatened with imprisonment, he created works of barely encoded, existential impact. The 'Contes Barbares' thematise death and transience with symbols such as offerings and lilies - and they do so in portraits: Gauguin adds his friend Jacob Meyer de Haan, who had died years earlier, to the young, vital Polynesian women. Original oil on canvas, Museum Folkwang, Essen. Fine art giclée on artist's canvas, mounted on stretcher. Limited edition of 499 numbered copies, with certificate. Framed in handcrafted real wood frame. Format 79 x 56 cm (H/W). Exclusively at ars mundi.
