Cézanne painted almost exclusively landscapes of the area around Aix-en-Provence, still lifes and scenes of everyday life, in which he wanted to depict what he perceived rather than visible nature. He developed a new conception of space, form and colour that was to set the trend for subsequent generations of painters. He is rightly described as the 'father of modernism'.
