Product information "Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: Picture 'Fehmarn Bay with Boats' (1913), framed"
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner on Fehmarn. To each painter his own paradise: For Van Gogh it was the South of France, for Nolde either the exoticism of the South Seas or the landscape around Seebüll, for Slevogt Nidden on the Baltic Sea. The examples could easily be added to. For Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, however, it was most certainly Fehmarn. The artist visited the island four times between 1908 and 1914, and during his stays he produced no fewer than 120 paintings as well as countless watercolours, drawings and sketches. If one reads the letters and notes, Kirchner not only found motifs and artistic inspiration on Fehmarn, but also a form of happiness that he never found again in his later life. On Fehmarn, the painter of the nervous big city became a closely observing depictor of nature, whose paintings are still able to communicate his personal sense of happiness to today's viewers. Kirchner invites him - like the blue figure in his 'Fehmarn Bay with Boats' - to a pure, undisguised, relaxed contemplation of his paradise.Original: 1913, oil on canvas, 120 x 90 cm, privately owned.
