In his later years, Claude Monet said that he did not paint objects, but rather the essence of things enveloped in atmosphere and light. And so he was constantly on the lookout for landscapes that offered him not only interesting motifs, but also special lighting conditions. He travelled to the Netherlands for the first time in 1871. For four months, the artist lived in Zaandam in northern Holland, not far from Amsterdam. He studied the old Dutch masters in the Rijksmuseum. But above all he worked: during his first stay alone, he created 25 of his 42 works with Dutch subjects.
