This painting goes back to the now legendary trip to Tunis, which August Macke undertook together with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet in April 1914. Macke was overwhelmed by the light and the intense colours of North Africa. His watercolour of the town of Hammamet is also dominated by the bright and contrasting colours.
