August Macke (1887-1914) was a pioneer of the avant-garde in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century and a member of the 'Blauer Reiter' group of artists. In 1913, Macke moved with his family to Oberhofen on Lake Thun in Switzerland. In 1914, he created this view of the village's castle park. Macke captured the atmosphere of this magnificent garden in his unique pictorial language with bold and bright colours. Original: 1914, watercolour, graphite on paper on cardboard, 23.2 x 28.9 cm, bequest Cornelius Gurlitt 2014, Kunstmuseum Bern.
